Planning his baptism was a bit of a whirlwind. We already knew we were going to baptize him, we had his Godparents picked out and we knew we wanted to do it sooner rather than later, but just as we were buckling down to plan the actual ceremony, Aaron’s grandmother fell ill and shortly after that she sadly passed away.
Naturally, we put the planning on hold while Aaron and his family took time to mourn. When we were able to turn our focus back to planning the baptism, Aaron realized that we were quickly approaching what would have been his grandmother’s 79th birthday. He decided, then, that he wanted to have Macario’s baptism on that day.
As I said, the date was quickly approaching, so we scrambled to find a church with availability. Fortunately, with less than one week to go we were able to find a church that would make an exception for us and hold the baptism that day even though it mean that we would not have the time to take the class. Thinking that we were set to go, we got an outfit and started planing for the baptism!
Unfortunately, when Aaron went back to turn in the registration paperwork he was informed that a member of the parish had died and the church was no longer available to have the baptism as they’d be holding a funeral instead. They offered a date in October for a private ceremony and Aaron took it. When we spoke later, though, I pointed out that Macario would not fit in his suit by October and so we contacted the church and they offered us a date for the upcoming weekend. Feeling like we had no other options, we decided to take that date.
With all that back and forth we were unable to properly invite all of the members of our families, but we were lucky enough to have our immediate family members there to celebrate with us which was very special.
During the ceremony, Macario was a perfect angel. He napped through the beginning of mass and woke up just in time for the ceremony. The priest called us up and the actual baptism took place. When that part was over we took our seats and listened as the priest continued with the mass service.
He read Matthew 14:22-33 which teaches that the Lord will always protect us, but that we must not lose faith. The message and the act of having just baptized my son were all so touching that I became emotional. To my surprise, I was very choked up and tears started flowing. Aaron could see this, so he reached over and held my hand. He whispered, “Are you happy?” and I nodded to say, “yes.”
I’m so honored that my son’s first sacrament has been made and I look forward to teaching him the importance of having faith.
We had a small gathering at my parents' house afterward to celebrate with food and cake! The food was delicious tri-tip from a local restaurant and some sides that I put together. My mom ordered a beautiful cake from a small bakery in town. It was the same cake as my shower cake only it was decorated differently. It was very yummy and went as quickly as my shower cake did!
The baptism took place during the 9:00 a.m. mass and so by early afternoon Macario had gotten all tuckered out. Fortunately he lasted long enough to visit with his guests.
Here are some pictures of the special day.
